When Alice goes to work, what does she do?
Alice, the ballet, was performed at the Ohio theater Columbus Ohio. The theater is majestic, baroque interior architecture, above the orchestra, loge, mezzanine and balcony levels all about floor, walls, railings and ceilings.
The actual building that houses the theater is a mere hundred yards away south from the Ohio Statehouse Capitol Building. That fact was not lost on me when we parked underground for event parking under the platform of the statehouse, and later after the dance, viewing the central spine of the statehouse, symmetrically on center, with the dome-less rotunda.
Alice is the central figure of the ballet and of course of the book describing her travails. Without rehashing the entire story, which is widely read at all ages, this story is to focus on a small portion of her exploring the underworld presented her.
In Act II of the ballet Jabberwocky is laying in wait within the woodlands and its lair. Meanwhile the White & Red Knights debate which one will quiet the Jabberwocky. Alice is quite impatient with the cunningness of the meaningless nonsense of the entity of the trees.
She takes the “word” from one of the knight leaders and comes face to face with the Jabberwocky in a debate of policy. She wins with the verbal assaults, silencing the jibber jabber. The knights cannot express their unending gratitude for Alice’s courage and persistence.
The art, choreography, music, costumes stage sets, and ballerinas make such an extravaganza of tiptoed dancing, second by second twists and turns, phenomenal positions seemingly unnatural, in a natural way, the human form at its highest postures.
There is by every means seen within the ballet, this one, ‘Alice’, analogous with happens in the building across E State Street. It is seen to be about what can, should and will happen to the political jabberwockies that make rules and regulations that benefit their corporate dealings, while dismissing and stomping out voices of the democratic majority.
It will be Alices of all ages and genders and freedoms which will quench the illegality and lawlessness of kleptocrats, taking their powers to extremes, against the reasonable majority. Rise up today Alice, (that is you), rise up with the Michael Scarmack’s of Ohio, be they in District 73, or beyond into the state, and the nation.
